Today
we navigated our first proper river. We set off just after 07.00 and
there was frost on the roof!!! We didn’t know what to expect once
on the river as the guide books say steer clear of the weirs. The
River Soar flows in and out of the canal and where there is a lock
there’s a big weir above to take the bulk of the water down to the
lower level. Most of the locks have a notice about not negotiating
the river if it is in the ‘red’, however, today the water level
was below the bottom of the green, due to our remarkable summer. Our
first weir was very clearly marked with the huge orange boom, sadly,
the rest of the weirs were not easily seen and several times you
couldn’t actually see where the river went. We have paired up with
another couple on NB Gyr and plan to share the locks for the next few
days, during which time we’ll have to cruise a short 2 ½ mile
stretch of the River Trent, which is huge compare to this little
River Soar.

Through
Leicester we saw some very interesting buildings that had large
chimneys and Leicester City Football ground. It was a treat to go
under several ornamental bridges that has several arches. We saw some beautiful murals and some floating art work too.
This
evening we are moored in a beautiful spot at Birstall.
